Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifth Biennial Report of the State Highway Commission of North Carolina, 1923-1924 In the preparation of this report, covering the period from June 30, 1922, to June 30, 1924, no attempt has been made to go into detail concerning the activities and accomplishments of the State Highway Commission. The report is so arranged that the reader should experi ence no difficulty in finding the desired information. A brief description of the functions of each department indicated on the organization chart on a preceding page is given, this being followed by the laws under which the Commission functions. A detailed project report from each district follows the report Of the activities of the various departments. A report of the expenditures for Operation, construction, and mainte nance is given in the report Of the auditor. Photographs throughout the volume are illustrative of the work being carried on. From a small organization the State Highway Commission has grown to be one of the largest and one of the most efficient Of its kind in the United States, and the record that the State has made in highway work has attracted numbers of highway officials from other States and from several foreign countries.
