Book excerpt: The effects of long-distance commuting on relationships has not been fully addressed by previous research. This phenomenological study is an analysis of interviews conducted with eight male and eight female employees at a Midwestern medical facility discussing their perceptions of how long-distance commuting has affected their relationships. The results of this study show a continuum of effects from commuting having no effect at all to commuting being a factor in a divorce. Eleven distinct themes about from the long-distance commuting were uncovered and discussed. These themes included: a lack of personal time, a lack of time with family members, teleworking, physical well-being, mental well-being, stress, driving issues, public transportation issues, long hours spent in commuting, and choices that led to long-distance commuting. Of the 16 persons interviewed five claimed no effect on his/her relationship brought about by their commute, five claimed that there was an initial effect but coping mechanisms have been devised to minimize the effects of the commute, five claimed that the commute was currently having an effect on his/her relationship, and one claimed that the commute played a part in her divorce. One participant felt that the time spent commuting prevented her from establishing any relationships. Suggestions for further research are included at the end of the paper.
