Book excerpt: The New York Yankees ball club is perhaps the most celebrated team in baseball history. Initially known as the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees moved to New York prior to the start of the 1903 American League season and were known as the Hilltoppers or Highlanders for the first decade of their existence before becoming the Yankees prior to the 1913 season. This day-by-day work chronicles the team from 1903 to the present, focusing on both players and events involving the Yankees. Noted are such milestones as significant trades and personnel moves, administrative issues, player births and deaths, memorable games, and miscellaneous facts. * April 10, 1913: After 10 years as the Highlanders and Hilltoppers, the club plays its first game as the Yankees. They lose 2-1, to Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators. * July 17, 1941: Indians third baseman Ken Keltner proves an agent to history when his dazzling glove work at the hot corner ensures that Joe DiMaggio will go hitless for the first time since May 15. DiMaggio's record-setting streak ends at 56 games. * October 1, 1961: After a summer of media scrutiny, Roger Maris survives the challenge of teammate Mickey Mantle and the suffocating shadow of Babe Ruth, launching his 61st home run of the season to establish a new record. * October 26, 2000: In the last World Series game of the 20th century, the Yankees defeat the New York Mets in Shea Stadium for their 26th world championship. They did not win their first title until October 15, 1923.
