Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph reports an experimental study of the development of children's number ideas in the primary grades. The children who were study subjects has all had at least two months of school training; it was not possible, therefore, to deal with the earliest beginnings of number knowledge such as number names, or the earliest forms of skill in the use of numbers, such as the ability to count. This study attempted to isolate the factors involved in the ability to apprehend visual concrete numbers, and to measure the influence of these factors in the development of that ability. The goal of this study is to develop a coherent description of the learning processes exhibited in acquiring primary arithmetic, and to develop principles for teaching primary number which are consistent with this description of the learning process.
