As opportunity permitted he was able to pick up not a little practical knowledge of grain by getting out in the morning with the early birds and taking frequent tours with the track inspectors in the yards. This would hardly be considered picnicking by most office men, but the experience was found useful later. In the spring of 1902 the Reynold Bros. Sent him out to represent them in the country west of the Mississippi, with headquarters at Moberly.
