"A lifelong learner is someone who is self-motivated to learn solely for the joy of learning. Think of a young child gushing about reptiles or a baby learning to take her first steps. Traditionally, a school system teaches knowledge but often tests on that knowledge in an artificial way to ensure consistency. A child who knows a lot about reptiles can identify them in movies, out in nature, or at a zoo. A baby keeps trying to walk even when they “fail” and fall, because the test is not contrived, it’s congruent. When children learn to study for a test, they tie learning to a grade or an assignment instead of growth. Rather than immersing themselves in a world of learning, they shut off once the test is over."
