Book excerpt: Slow Travels-Georgia, explores all regions of the State, from the Appalachians to the Low Country along the Coast. U.S. 27 and 41 begin their routes through the contested Chattanooga to Atlanta corridor of the Civil War, including the earlier past of the Cherokee as well as the industrial development after Reconstruction. U.S. 23, coming down from the mountains of Northeast Georgia, joins U.S. 41 to explore the Atlanta Area and the short trip from Atlanta to Macon. From Macon, U.S. 23 travels along portions of the Golden Isles Parkway to the Okefenokee. U.S. 41 continues south through the land of the peanut and peach before slipping into Florida. U.S. 27 travels the land of the Chattahoochee River south of Macon to Bainbridge. U.S. 84 arcs its way from the Atlantic across southern Georgia to Alabama. U.S. 17 hugs the Georgia Low Country coast, touching the Golden Isles. Finally, U.S. 80 is the route of Middle Georgia, connecting the cities of Savannah, Macon, and Columbus, and the history in between.
