The masons were instructed to produce masonry having the spaces between the bricks well filled with mortar, Without specifying the method. The method of filling the vertical joints by Slushing the mortar rather than by shoving the bricks was chosen by the masons. During the building of the beams one of the masons was cautioned not to furrow the horizontal beds While the other made smooth spread beds Without special effort. Although these masons had no previous experience with reinforced brickwork, the two masons and one help er built the last 12 beams and 12 piers at the rate of one beam and one pier per 3% hours.
