The birth statistics presented in this report are compiled from data obtained by registration by physicians and mid wives, who are required by statute2 to report the name and place and date of birth to the clerk or registrar of the city or town in which the birth occurred within forty-eight hours after the birth of every child in -cases of which they were in charge. The clerk of each city and town is also required 3 to ascertain annually in J annary certain facts relative to all children born during the preceding year and resident therein.
