Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear stimulation of emission in noble gases was investigated. The gases were contained in a cylinder lined with U(235)O2 or B(10) and closed with confocal end mirrors. The cylinder was irradiated in the core of a TRIGA Reactor. Fission fragments from the cylinder wall ionized the gases and effectively 'pumped' the gases to metastable states required for laser action. Total light output was determined using a silicon PIN detector. Spectral measurements were made with a grating spectrograph. Spectral lines were observed at the wavelengths observed in ionic lasers pumped by conventional means. Specifically, a strong line was observed at 668.4 nm corresponding to singly ionized Argon.
