Book excerpt: Technological innovations are revolutionizing how clinicians provide treatment, offering novel tools and platforms that enhance therapy and support for individuals seeking mental well-being.The purpose of this study was to explore psychology clinicians’ and trainee’s knowledge of and attitudes toward novel brain stimulation technologies for clinical use and determine their potential willingness to use and learn more about them. An on-line survey was conducted of 43student trainees and practicing clinicians. The survey contained 46 questions that assessed demographic characteristics and knowledge of and attitudes toward using various brain stimulation devices. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) was the most well-known BST, with61.9% of respondents reporting moderate to high familiarity. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation(TMS) followed at 33.33%, while familiarity with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), and Brain Computer Interface (BCI) was lower at 20.93%, 13.95%, and4.65%, respectively. ECT was perceived as the most effective while BCI was rated least effective. In terms of safety, ECT also led as the BST perceived to be safest, followed by TMS,DBS, and VNS. BCI was perceived as least safe. A majority of participants, 62.5%, expressed a desire to advance BSTs, and 75% believed it is important for psychology training programs to include BST-related training. The findings highlight the need for educational reform to better equip mental health providers with knowledge and skills regarding emerging BSTs. While ECT is the most recognized and trusted BST, there is significant interest in advancing and learning about newer technologies.
