Book excerpt: The apparent rise of police killings of unarmed black males, such as the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, has sparked a national debate about racial bias in law enforcement. The main purpose of this matura paper is to detect other causes for the disproportionate share of black victims besides racism, and to outline possible approaches to the problem of the relationship between law enforcement and the black community. Furthermore, the paper addresses the racial gap in the United States concerning standard of living, criminality, and trust in law enforcement. Another goal was to determine whether these incidents have led to any changes (e.g. in law enforcement). The investigation showed that the problem seems to lie deep in the socio-economic structures of poor black neighborhoods with a high crime rate, and in the use of excessive force by police in general. Although there are signs of racism, an overall conclusion about institutional racism in the United States could not be drawn. The practical part of the paper consists of an analysis and comparison of the corresponding news coverage by The New York Times and Fox News. The analysis has provided an insight into different perceptions of the situation, with Fox News generally defending the police, in contrast to The New York Times.
