The fear of change created enormous opposition to this waking and bicycling trail. Trail supporters did not see that something as benign as a pedestrian trail would divide a community. Political entities grappled with one another; some did not want to see the trail, and threatened court action to stop it. Others saw the long term benefits, and pushed for the creation of the trail risking their political careers. Businesses sided for and against the trail as did neighborhoods along the proposed trail corridor. Perseverance and commitment eventually prevailed even though it took much longer than anyone had anticipated. Today, this trail is an icon to the community and used by hundreds of thousands of people every year.
