A Benedictine abbess of a monastery in Germany, she was not only known as a Christian mystic and a visionary, but also as a philosopher, a composer, and a writer. She is even more, perhaps, a woman of today's time than her own with her emphasis on ecology, medicine, natural science, gardening, and "the complementary relationship of men and women." She is indeed, as Pope Benedict said, a worthy role model for Catholics today. Her liturgical feast day is September 17.
