Book excerpt: Letters to John Thompson's father in Ireland, dated 14 February and 28 April 1861, relating his personal experiences at Fort Moultrie, the move to Fort Sumter, and the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter. After the move to Fort Sumter Thompson writes "That they intend to bombard us is evident...but we are sure their attempt will prove a failure." He tells his father "in spite of all their [Confederate soldiers] I am almost sure they never will fire a shot at us, indeed I think they are only too glad to be let alone." He describes Colonel Wigfall coming to Fort Sumter carrying a white flag and begging the soldiers to stop firing.
