Book excerpt: Understanding generational differences in the workplace has been a topic of interest for many organizations. This study will analyze the generational differences and motivational factors of three generational cohorts who are working alongside each other today: Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y (Millennials). The objective of this study is to review previous literature and determine whether multigenerational differences affect motivational factors in today’s public sector workplace. Additionally, this study will review motivational theories and practices to identify changes leaders can make to satisfy employee needs and ensure organizational success. Quantitative data will be used to measure the independent and dependent variables of this study. The researcher will utilize systematic sampling to conduct a voluntary survey of Los Angeles County, Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) employees. The survey will seek to identify differences in motivational factors of the three generations employed with DCBA.
