Book excerpt: Driven by an increasing recognition of the many advantages of natural gas and by the need to diversify its coal-dominated energy supply, China's natural gas industry is poised for rapid expansion. Some major gas infrastructure projects have been launched to support ambitious gas growth targets in the country for the next five years and beyond. Other countries within the IEA and outside, have faced similar challenges in developing their gas markets, but the challenges faced by China are far greater. Chinese gas reserves are relatively limited and are located far from the main centres of demand; cheap alternatives are available; there is a lack of related technology and skill; and knowledge of how best to develop markets is not widespread. This report attempts to address these challenges.
