Book excerpt: The report is concerned with the relative effectiveness of one-sided versus two-sided presentations of an issue. Japanese University students were presented either with one-sided or two-sided communications on the subjects of the Cuban crisis and visits by American nuclear powered submarines to Japanese ports. In each instance, a point of view was taken favoring the official position adopted by the United States with regard to each of these issues. However, the research was designed to test the effects of including or omitting discussion of selected arguments opposing this position.
