Book excerpt: This is Alex's story. It is based on a true story. A story of girl who had to overcome many obstacles in her life. She grew up in a small housing project with her mother, an alcoholic. She would spend most nights home alone scared hiding under the kitchen table with her dog waiting for her mother to return from her all night partying. At the young age of six Alex couldn't understand why her mother left her so much. As she got older things just got worse. She was thrown out of her house at thirteen with nowhere to go. She spent her high school years staying on the couches of family members while trying to attend school. Though Alex's mother was the root of all her problems, she just couldn't stop loving her. Unfortunately, by the time Alex figured this out it was too late
