He believes that there is a place for all the standard paving materials, provided that skill and care are used in the design and construction. Greater attention to details and a more thorough understanding of the limitations as well as the strong points of each kind of pavement are essential items to good street or road surfaces. It is hoped that the present volume on Brick Pavements will prove of interest to municipal officers, commissioners and citizens in general as well as to city engineers, road engineers, county surveyors and paving contractors. For this reason many tables, formulae and other technical matter have been omitted as these would be dry read ing for the first class of readers and are available to the second class in numerous published handbooks for engineers. The author wishes to acknowledge the help and encouragement rendered by the Western Paving Brick Manufacturers Association in the preparation of this volume. They have undertaken its publica tion and distribution and otherwise aided in gathering the illustra tions and historical data. Their interest in the subject matter has been the presentation of methods of construction which will insure the best and most satisfactory use of brick material for pavements.
