Book excerpt: John Stevenage was born in 1759 in England. He enlisted in the Madras Europen Regiment of the East India Company in 1778 and was sent to India, where his family remained for two hundred years. He married Susanna and they had one son, John James (1799-1854) not long before his father was killed in battle. Susanna and her son moved from Madras to Cochin. John James married Frances Cornelia Guzhlar. They had three sons and two daughters who survived to adulthood. The author's branch of the family moved to Bangalore.
