Book excerpt: A Kind of Love Story With Incursions by the Writer is a wildly inventive and gleeful departure from the norm. The story is simple, Holly grows up alongside Adam. They have a loose relationship that intensifies somewhat through high school and college. It could become a full-fledged relationship but there are obstacles. There is the matter of Holly becoming "locked-in" her body following a car accident. There is the matter of Adam becoming attracted to her in this vegetative state. Yu James, a Chinese-Canadian tai chi teacher who helps Holly regain her health is on a religious mission and his plans include Holly. Sammy, a horny businessman, has plans of a different sort for her. On top of all this, enter the Writer, an all-round shit disturber who injects himself into the plotlines to tell tales, "spill the beans," kibitz, criticize, magnify, distort, obfuscate, and generally muddy (although sometimes greatly clarifying) the waters. And what a lark he has doing so. And what a love story this almost is.
