Book excerpt: The traditional information for treating symptoms of occlusal dysfunction and temporomandibular disorders or TMD are basically focused on treating the symptoms as if they were the cause. In contrast, the primary purpose of this book is to provide the practitioner with the basic information that directs their evaluation and diagnosis to identify and treat the etiology or the cause rather than the symptom. To be an effective practice principle, this approach has to be logical and the treatment procedures practical to implement. Logical and practical because the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of the cause can be determined two ways. The first is by relating the para-functional occlusal contacts to the jaw movements. The second, if the symptoms are indiscriminate or constant, then relate the symptomatic muscles to its action of jaw movement then the corresponding para-functional occlusal contacts. Either way, this evaluation approach is conservative and treatment can be initiated almost immediately. To help the dentist implement the principles of a cause-based treatment, all the treatment procedures are illustrated and explained in detail using actual clinical cases. These principles are applicable to resolving the frequently seen as well as the more challenging symptoms of occlusal dysfunction and TMD. The greatest benefit of this cause-based treatment approach is that there are only three treatment options to resolve symptoms and achieve functional occlusal stability.
