Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellington's Lieutenants Among his lieutenants in the Peninsula there was none in whom Wellington reposed more absolute confidence than Rowland, Lord Viscount Hill. He was assured of his cool judgment, his imperturbable self-possession, his intuitive grasp of his superior's far-reaching plans, and of a self-abnegation altogether untainted by personal ambitions. In strong contrast to Craufurd, who was all fire and passionate impulse, though he could dare much on occasion he was never betrayed into imprudence; and unlike Picton and other warriors of a hard-swearing generation, he was so temperate of speech that a single occasion is recorded as noteworthy, when he was tempted to an ejaculation resembling an oath. Perhaps there was little merit in curbing a temper so absolutely under command. With his squire-like seat on horseback and his phlegmatic face, he was familiarly known by the sobriquet of "Farmer Hill"; but the soldiers, who appreciated his kindly care for their comforts, affectionately translated "Farmer" into "Father."
