Book excerpt: This study analyzed the relationship of personality traits of varsity level wrestlers and their respective head coaches in the Heart of the North athletic conference. Barron, Bloomer, Chetek, Cumberland, Ladysmith, Rice Lake, and Spooner make up this Wisconsin Conference. This investigation was conducted with seven of the Heart of the North schools who compete in varsity interscholastic wrestling. A total of seven coaches and 87 wrestlers were involved. The 16 PF by Cattell was administered to all the juniors and seniors at the beginning of the 1974-75 season. The tests were conducted under the supervision of the high school guidance counselors. In testing the difference between two correlation coefficients for uncorrelated data a Z score of 2.01, for small samples, was established. One may conclude that there is a significant difference at the 5% level or better between the population correlation coefficients. The 2.01 was estab1isbed by use of a T table. Of the 16 personality characteristics tested, nine proved to be of a significant difference comparing successful and unsuccessful wrestlers and their respective coaches.
