Book excerpt: There is a new willingness in a growing number of European countries to adopt a more innovative approach to returning irregular migrants and asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected, by linking their return with re-integration and development assistance programmes. Some countries, such as France, the Netherlands and Switzerland, are already piloting such policies, whilst other countries are considering this approach. This report compares the experiences of a selection of existing assisted return programmes and draws lessons for best practice, focusing on three aspects: programme implementation, the targeting of assistance and programme evaluation.
