Book excerpt: The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) announced on 2 July 1985 homeporting decisions in support of the Navy's goal of a 600-ship fleet affecting nine Gulf Coast cities. Pensacola was one of the cities selected for homeporting of one large deck operational carrier (to replace the smaller training carrier) and one Naval reserve minecraft. An increase in personnel loadings (1,703 military, 41 civilian, and 1,396 dependents), additional associated facilities and special operational facilities to support the Aircraft Carrier (CV) Kitty Hawk will affect the existing mission of NAS Pensacola. The purpose of this planning study for Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola is to provide for the efficient and orderly development of the real estate and facilities resources of NAS Pensacola so that it can successfully complete its assigned mission in support of the Gulf Coast Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (CVBG). The planning study gives overall guidance which ensures that proposed CVBG related projects will be sited to be compatible with existing facilities of NAS Pensacola and other adjoining or nearby command and tenant activities of the Pensacola Naval Complex. It is structured to serve as a tool for all echelons of decision making relative to NAS Pensacola physical development issues.
