Book excerpt: This text's approach to the organization of massively parallel processing is based on the utilization of cellular arrays of a specific sort, called distributed functional structures (DF-structures). These structures are related to the well-known content addressed memories, but provide immediate realization of an extensive nest of data processing functions. In contrast to the classical cellular automata, which are universal but redundant, the DF-structures are specialized but economical. The author argues that they correspond in the best way to the nature of up-to-date VLSI technology.
