This resulted in misconceptions about what services the department could or could not provide. The purpose of this research was to develop an operational plan to market the department using ideas that have met with success in the private sector. The results of the research indicated that a marketing plan was needed to better serve the customers, both internal and external, and that many techniques used in the private sector could be used in the public sector with similar success. Some of these recommendations include establishing a relationship with your customers through community events, advising them of services that are performed via a newsletter, and by use of customer service surveys of which the results could appear in the newsletter.
