First, it contributes to our knowledge about an epoch oftentimes ignored in terms of cultural production: the literature of the Porfiriato and, more generally, that of nineteenth century Mexico, remains largely unstudied. While the narrative produced after the Mexican Revolution of 1910 has been thoroughly explored by scholars from all around the globe, Porfirian literature has remained a great mystery. That is, this dissertation constitutes the first monograph-length study of Porfirian literature since John Brushwood's scholarship during the late 1990s.
