It includes information on: general travel trends; how, when and why people travel; gender aspects; social inclusion and accessibility; regional variations; travel costs and expenditure. Findings include: the proportion of households with access to one or more cars increased from 59 per cent in 1980 to 74 per cent in 2002; in the 10 per cent most deprived areas of the country, around 55 per cent of households did not have access to a car; at the peak time for 'school run' traffic in urban areas, 13 per cent of cars on the road were taking children to school; the number of walking and cycling trips both fell by 20 per cent between 1992-94 and 2002-03; and in 2002-03 travel accounted for 15 per cent of the average household's weekly expenditure, with the majority on motoring.
