Book excerpt: The coastal environment, as defined in this classification, has the common attributes: (1) an atmospheric and marine fluid environment, and (2) an interacting coastal interface system. Each attribute was independently classified prior to the integration of the components into the Classification of Coastal Environments of the Americas. The atmospheric system was treated using the methodology of air mass climatology, and the marine environment was classified using water mass analysis with modifications appropriate to nearshore conditions. The classification of shoreline interfaces was developed by detailed analysis of coastal landforms. (Author).
