Tabitha Nix, a rule follower, is hesitant about listening to her father's wishes about her trying to make it into Fidelity, a Quadrant based on government and loyalty. She's accepted into Ardent, the most daring and audacious Quadrant. The Quadrant that just so happens to be surviving off the bloodshed of innocent Graduates in a test known as The Attrition. In Ardent, Tabitha is forced to learn how to fight with and without a weapon, something she's fearful of doing. Her trainers in Ardent push her to the point where she's determined to know why they are training the Graduates this way. She is even willing to break the rules to find out what everyone's hiding from her. She discovers something she wished she never had. In the Ardent test, The Attrition, Tabitha is forced to kill and murder to survive. She questions everything she knows about the four Quadrants, and everyone around her. Who can she trust? Can she even trust herself? What other lies have been fed to her by her father and the government? The answers Tabitha finds uproot more problems in the four Quadrants than she ever imagined and she's forced to make a choice-comply and keep her family safe or rebel and threaten the existence of the only world she's known.
