Book excerpt: This document includes: INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF THE IBM 602A CALCULATOR FOR DAILY SOIL MOISTURE ACCOUNTING, by Ray F. Pengra. 1961, 22p. incl. illus. tables (Technical note no. 1) MANUAL FOR USE OF THE IBM 650 CALCULATOR FOR COMPUTING POTENTIAL EVAPOTRANSPIRATION AND THE WATER BALANCE, by Howard H. Engelbrecht. 1961, 16p. incl. tables (Technical note no. 1) The Thornthwaite climatic water balance provides a realistic way to evaluate the moisture factor in climate. By means of the water balance bookkeeping procedure, using the data of air temperature, precipitation, and location, it is possible to determine either on a monthly or a daily basis the periods and amounts of the water surplus, water deficit, soil moisture storage, and the runoff of water. The method of computation of the climatic factor, potential evapotranspiration, and its use in either the daily or monthly water balance procedures was discussed in detail in previous issues of publications in Climatology. High speed computers have been used to apply the daily Thornthwaite climatic water balance bookkeeping procedure to the solution of moisture problems. (Author).
