Book excerpt: Although this perception understandably recognizes the important role of large metropolitan areas in the economic and cultural life of the Province, it tends to undermine the value of the vast periphery of smaller cities and towns that exist outside of this core region. [...] Given the renewed interest in quality of place as a key attribute to the knowledge-economy, it is not surprising that most of the research on the creative and knowledge economy has tended to focus on core, large metropolitan areas as the obvious spaces where creativity thrives (Florida 2005; Mcgranahan and has created Science North Enterprises and offers consulting, exhibit design and production, [...] The population remained virtually the same between 2001 and 2006 (approximately 786,290), however, the region is declining as a percentage of the population of the province (Southcott 2007).
