Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gettysburg The cavalrymen had exhausted their oarhine ammunition and were holding the line with Colt revolvers when Reynold's arrived at 10 o'clock with Wadsworth's division and Hall's Second Maine Battery. The new line was barely formed before the Confederates struck it in force. General Reynolds rode forward to better observe the field. Animated by his presence Meredith's Iron Brigade charged, turned the enemy's right, andcaptured the Confederate general Archer, and a large part of his command. Cutler's men drove the rebels under Davis from the railroad cut, pell-mell. It was a brilliant opening to the great battle, but cost the life of Reynolds, who, while direct ing operations from the clump of trees near the mcpherson Farm, was shot and almost instantly killed. The grove is now known as Reynolds' Woods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
